I met Claire in an English class my sophomore year in high school. She and I were in similar circles, but had never had the opportunity to get to know each other. Our first project was to give a speech introducing our partner, and we were randomly placed together. As our friend groups merged because of mutual friends’ relationships, I pinpointed Claire as an honest, dependable friend. Because we’re both so passionate and strong-willed, however, we would butt heads over petty high school drama. We all graduated from good old Benet Academy in spring 2013, and Claire and I kept in touch most often out of any of our friends. Now, five years after our awkward meeting, we are frequently mistaken as sisters because of our similar mannerisms and appearances. I don’t know where I would be without her. She is currently a junior at Marquette University in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, studying accounting. She is the vice president of finance for her sorority and is a member of Beta Alpha Psi honors accounting organizations. As if she doesn’t have enough going on, she decided to pick up intramural inner tube water polo and soccer this past year. Not surprisingly, we spent as much time as possible together over Thanksgiving break, and, during some of that time, I was able to get her perspective on dating in college.
Blair is currently dating my friend Kylie, who I interviewed previously in this blog. He is working towards his Associate’s in business at Moberly Area Community College and is an assistant manager at Finish Line at Columbia Mall. He’s a huge sports fan and likes playing video games with his roommates in his free time. He and Kylie were introduced by a member of mine and Kylie’s sorority a little over a year ago and, although there have been some bumps along the way, they’ve been dating since then. Since he doesn’t attend Mizzou, he was able to provide a different take on dating in your early 20s.
Josh is currently dating my friend Toni (who I also interviewed for this project) and has been dating her for as long as I have known the two of them. The two met in high school, so Josh actually attends Missouri University of Science and Technology in Rolla, Missouri. He visits Toni most weekends, though, so I have had the opportunity to get to know him fairly well. He is a junior mechanical engineering major, member of Pi Kappa Alpha Fraternity and director of student programming on the Student Union Board. I have never seen a couple, who has dated long-distance for longer than they’ve dated in the same location, as strong as Josh and Toni. That’s why I thought it would be an interesting idea to get the other side from Josh.
